Marc Chagall (1887-1985), one of the greatest artists of 20th century, executed much monumental works in the latter half of his life. Among them, included important works excuted in large scale both about size and about imagination, such as the painting for the ceiling of the Paris Opera, and the staind glasses for the cathedrales of several cities in France. This exhibition is the first occation to introduce the monumental works of Chagall in Japan. Many dessins will tell us the process of painter's imagination and creation.
Works for performing art are also remarkable. Chagall designed stage set and costumes for opera and ballet program - "Daphnis et Chloé" (1958, composed by Ravel), "The Magic Flute" (1965-66, composed by Mozart), etc. They could be appreciated as synthetic art by Chagall.
Another theme is Chagall as multi-talented artist. As much as painting, gouache and print, he executed with various media - glass, mozaic, tapestry, sculpture, ceramic, and so on. From 250 oeuvles, new perspective of Chagall will be shown.
