Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), one of America’s leading artists, portrayed only the landscapes and the people around him in his hometown. Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, as well as in Cushing, Maine where his summer villa is located. His works resonate in the hearts of many of their viewers.
Among his works, Christina’s world (1948) is particularly renowned as one of the representative masterpieces of American art. After a 22-year-old Andrew Wyeth first visited that big house in Cushing, Maine, where Christina Olson and her brother Alvaro lived, he continued to portray the Olson house for almost 30 years. These works, known as the Olson series, occupy a special place among Wyeth’s works. More than 200 Olson series sketches and watercolors from the collection of Marunuma Art Park in Asaka City, Saitama Prefecture, are highly evaluated worldwide as they allow one to trace Wyeth’s creative process.
Through this exhibition, consisting of these sketches and works from the Marunuma Art Park collection, you will feel as if you were witnessing first hand how Wyeth perceived and tried to capture the lives of Christina and Alvaro Olson and the house in which they lived.
