Akiko Hayashi - Original Illustrations for Picture Book

Akiko Hayashi has made numerous works of art as a picture book author ever since she published her first book “Miki’s First Errand” more than 40 years ago. Many children and adults alike are drawn to her affectionate and thoughtful stories that describe the innocence of children and the challenges they experience. These classic stories still remain widely popular to this day.

Almost all of Hayashi’s original artwork used in her picture books is part of a collection at the Miyagi Museum of Art. This exhibition features 25 titles and approximately 200 pieces of artwork and documents including her masterpieces such as “Miki’s First Errand” and “Amy and Ken Visit Grandma”, as well as works from the early years when Hayashi was an illustrator to her most recent work “Little Chick”. The heartwarming stories behind her works and her drawing techniques that bring out rich expressions will capture your attention.

Through this exhibition, we hope you will be allured to the nostalgic, gentle world created by Hayashi.
