Hyakusui HIRAFUKU (1877-1933) was a Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist from the town of Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture. Hirafuku studied Western-style sketching in addition to Nihonga, and his ability to capture the essence of his surroundings lead to his participation in art movements promoting naturalism. He also worked for an extended period of time as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines. During his time at the Kinreisha Society, Hirafuku gained new knowledge from his peers, who were well-versed in tradition and classic works. He also drew creative inspiration from Manyo literature which the Araragi school of poets, whom he was close to throughout his lifetime, modeled their works after.
All of Hyakusui’s works from museum storage as well as related materials will be on display.
