The 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake resulted in fires that completely burned downcentral Tokyo and plunged the capital into a stateof devastation comparable to that in Europe during World War I. A number of painters captured the physical and emotional impact of the earthquake.
However, as intense efforts for recovery moved forward, the emerging modern cityscape and popular metropolitan culture became new subjects in art. This exhibition features works that capture the urban landscape after the Great Kanto Earthquake through the end of World War II.
