Special Feature: HAYAMI Gyoshu and the selected works of figure paintings

Gyoshu Hayami (1894-1935) was an artist who pursued the potential of Japanese art materials and continued to break into new ground for expression during the Taisho and early Showa periods.

After his training period during which Hayami was inspired by Shiko Imamura, a senior apprentice, Hayami sought to create Japanese art that emulated the texture and details of oil paintings and included additional decorative features. Hayami tirelessly took on the challenge of creating a brand new form of expression in art.

In 1930, Hayami was 36 years old when he visited Italy and Western European countries and was struck with the urge to study portraits, a style he had almost never drawn before. However, halfway into his studies, Hayami passed away suddenly at the age of 40.

Since last year, the museum has been entrusted with replicas of Hayami’s works from his training at the art academy and portrait sketches and rough sketches created later in his life.

The special feature of this exhibit is the artwork “Pigeon and Sparrows,” which was made by Hayami when he was 33 and takes advantage of the quality of art materials and conveys details as fine as the texture of the feathers. The exhibit will also feature other entrusted works.

Portraits by Kokei Kobayashi and Yukihiko Yasuda, both of whom were close to Hayami, and other artists living around the same period will also be on display, leaving visitors to contemplate on portrait expressions that Hayami tried to undertake.

Representative sculptures and drawings by Churyo Sato are exhibited.

Room 9 Original Illustrations for Children's Book:NAKATANI Chiyoko

The museum houses a leading collection in picture books with over 10,000 original drawings from about 530 titles.
Gallery 9 features original illustrations from picture books by various authors as well as sculptures by Churyo Sato.
For this exhibition, the gallery will show original drawings from "The Lion with a Bird's Nest" and "The Little Old Woman in the Strawberry Field" billustrated by NAKATANI Chiyoko.
Come explore the gallery and view Churyo Sato’s many sculptures including the plaster relief, "The Turnip – An Old Russian Tale".
