The Miyagi Museum of Art houses a large number of original illustrations for children’s books in its collection. In particular, the collection focuses on the early years of Fukuinkan Shoten Publishers, Inc.’s Kodomo no tomo (lit. Friend of Children), a monthly magazine which began publication in 1956. In the early years of Kodomo no tomo, the publisher aimed to make books that would provide children with a high-quality artistic experience. To that end, they commissioned artists from a wide range of fields, including painters, sculptors, designers, cartoonists, among others, to create illustrations. These artists experimented with a variety of techniques and materials, expressing themselves freely in original illustrations. By constantly pushing itself and innovating, Kodomo no tomo soon gave rise to artists who used children’s books as their main outlet, such as Yamawaki Yuriko, who brought Guri and Gura to life, and Nakano Hirotaka, who incorporates his experience as a graphic designer into his works.
The exhibit will showcase a collection of around 360 pieces from 53 works by 33 artists, including popular works such as Guri and Gura and Her First Shopping, as well as many works that will be on display for first time. The variety of original illustrations on exhibit here tell the story of the beginnings of children’s book culture and the path it has traveled to take its current shape as something widely enjoyed among children and adults. Please take this opportunity to appreciate the world of original children’s book illustrations.
