Defining Features of the Miyagi Museum of Art

The Miyagi Museum of Art opened its doors in November of 1981, and the Sato Churyo Gallery was opened in June 1990.

Our collection is characterized by contemporary art from the post-Meiji era, works connected to Miyagi and the Tohoku region, and works by overseas artists including Kandinsky and Klee, as well as original illustrations from post-war Japanese picture books.

In addition to the permanent exhibits maintained within the Main Building and the Sato Churyo Gallery, the Miyagi Museum of Art houses a Visible Storage facility that showcases works from the museum’s collection. Additionally, four to five Special Exhibitions are held each year. These include exhibitions centered around various themes related to contemporary art, and exhibitions that showcase outstanding art both from Japan and overseas.

The museum staff also help visitors to explore their creativity. Visitors can freely engage in creative pursuits in our Studios, while children can learn about and enjoy art at our Kids Studio.

Through these initiatives, the Miyagi Museum of Art strives to serve as an art museum that is rooted in regional culture, and a beloved community institution that is open to everybody.
