Modern art after the Meiji era, focused mainly on works associated with Miyagi Prefecture and the Tohoku Region.
Works centered around Germany's modern art, including works from the end of the 19th century, German expressionism and works associated with Bauhaus, Italian and French posters, sculpture by Henry Spencer Moore, Fernando Botero and others.
Works by artists from Miyagi Prefecture, including Ryosuke Watanabe (Western painting), Cho-u Ota (Japanese-style painting), Fuku Shoji (Japanese-style painting) and others, as well as works related to this prefecture including Miyagi Prefectural Office and View of Matsushima by Yuichi Takahashi.
Works by artists affiliated with the Tohoku Region including Shiko Munakata (Aomori Prefecture), Tetsugoro Yorozu (Iwate Prefecture), Shunsuke Matsumoto (Iwate Prefecture), Hyakusui Hirafuku (Akita Prefecture) and Sadao Tsubaki (Yamagata Prefecture).
The collection has 146 oil paintings and other works including Ai-Mitsu's A Bird, collected by Toru Sunouchi, famous for his essay "Kimagure Bijutsukan" ("Whimsical Museum.")
The collection has 48 works by the Gutai Art Association, an association created in 1954 of avant-garde artists from the Kansai Region who followed Jiro Yoshihara. These works include pieces by Seiko Kanno, an artist originally from Miyagi Prefecture.
Approximately 500 main titles from the original, monthly picture book series Kodomo no Tomo (Children's Friend) published in 1956 by Fukuinkan Shoten publishing company.
Approximately 2,500 bronze sculptures by Churyo Sato, modern Japan's representational sculptor, including plaster casts and drawings. (Churyo Sato Gallery opened in 1990) Hat, Summer and other works.
Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele and others
The Kandinsky Collection showcases 36 works, including one of his most significant earlier works and the largest Paul Klee Collection in all art museums throughout Japan, which includes 35 major pieces including Anatomy of Aphrodite and other valuable works. The Schiele Collection will showcase main works including two tempera art pieces.
Includes Collected New European Prints, The Graphic Work by Egon Schiele, and Hermann Max Pechstein's The Lord's Prayer, which were produced at the Bauhaus print studio in Weimar, as well as prints by Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde.
This collection includes 70 Italian and French posters from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's Le Divan Japonais and other works collected by Einen Miura and his wife, renowned binder Tini Miura.
