Front Garden (Approach)

Front Garden

Dani KARAVAN (1930-2021) "Ma'ayan" 1995]

Of the four gardens of the Museum, the front garden invites the outside world to the Museum. It is bordered with various trees including the zelkova, the prefectural tree. The approach is tile-lined and spacious, ushering visitors to all three parts of the Museum; the main building's entrance hall, the Churyo Sato Gallery and the Kenmin Gallery.

[Dani KARAVAN (1930-2021) "Ma'ayan" 1995]
This work was specially created for the Miyagi Museum of Art by Dani Karavan who is known as an environmental artist from Isreal. Ma'ayan means a spring in Hebrew. The main part of the work consists of a row of identical columns as the existing ones at the approach to the museum entrance. A spring of water that rises from the base of the northernmost column snakes through the row to the base of the old zelkova tree that already stood as a part of the original museum site plan. The water encircles the tree before flowing underground once again.
The sixth column from the tree also functions as a sundial or a solar calendar. Built into this same column is a traditional Japanese water harp that resonates into a terra-cotta jar. We can hear the spring's water as the symbolic voice of life or hope.

Courtyard

The Courtyard

The courtyard is an open-air space surrounded by columns and arcade. The courtyard usually acts as the connection between the Studios, the Children's Playroom, but also functions as a place to exhibit works or as a place for workshops and concerts.

North Garden

North Garden

This is a landscape garden in the go-round style facing the Hirose River. It is surrounded by the prefectural tree, the zelkova and other trees that are in tuned with the plant life found in the Hirose River basin. It is a perfect place for a stroll or for relaxing. There is also a pond containing colored carp and a man-made waterfall giving the garden a Japanesque flavor.

Alice's Garden

Alice's Garden

This is a garden that contains many sculptures and perfectly utilizes the space between the main building and the Churyo Sato Gallery. A gigantic half-mirror is located on the wall of the Churyo Sato Gallery facing this garden, creating a glass arch. The scenery that is reflected in this large mirror invites people into a world of imagination that is of another dimension.
